We are pleased to offer a fascinating and well-preserved example of Swedish military adaptation: a 1916-dated Swedish Mauser M96/38 manufactured by Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori, presented in very good overall condition and equipped with the highly desirable Västerås micrometer rear sight.
This rifle tells a compelling two-part story. It began its service life as a standard M96 long rifle during the First World War. Decades later, it was selected for the Swedish Army’s modernization program, where it was expertly shortened and refined into the handier, updated M96/38 carbine configuration. The addition of the precision Västerås micrometer sight—a sought-after upgrade for target shooting and enhanced accuracy—elevates this example beyond the standard military configuration and speaks to Sweden’s deep-rooted tradition of marksmanship.
The rifle remains in very good condition, with strong metal finish, crisp Carl Gustafs markings, and a solid stock showing honest service wear. The bore is bright with good rifling. Regarding the numbering:
The receiver and all bolt components retain matching serial numbers, confirming the mechanical integrity of the rifle’s core assembly.
The floor plate and barrel bands are mismatched—a common and acceptable characteristic for a rifle that underwent arsenal maintenance or parts replacement during its long service life.
For the collector or shooter, this M96/38 offers a compelling combination: the historical depth of a 1916-dated receiver, the functional refinement of the interwar carbine conversion, and the rare addition of the Västerås micrometer sight. It is a solid, honest, and character-rich example of Sweden’s finest military rifle evolution, ready for display or the range.
